Gisele Pelicot

Why do we need a country ruled by us, women? A lot of reasons all along history teach us that is the best solution.

Miss Gisele Pélicot (Villingen-Schwenningen 1952)

France, September 12, 2020: In a supermarket, a woman wearing a miniskirt notices a man positioning his mobile phone camera to record up her skirt. She alerts the supermarket’s private security, who call the police; she then files a formal complaint against the individual. The police arrest the man, identified as Dominique Pélicot, and take him to his home, where they seize all his electronic devices to investigate whether there are other victims.

This is how the famous «Pélicot Case» begins. What follows is already known to a large part of the public:

On Dominique Pélicot’s personal computer, hundreds of videos are found in which he (along with dozens of other men) rapes his wife, who is visibly drugged.

The videos show as many as 86 different men participating in the events. Of these 86 men, 50 (in addition to Gisele’s husband) were identified and prosecuted. These 50 men represent a wide range of profiles: they include young and old, burly and thin, black and white individuals. Among them are firefighters, truck drivers, military personnel, security guards, a journalist, and a DJ. In fact, the French media dubbed them *Monsieur Tout-le-monde* («Mr. Average» or «Everyman»), as they were ordinary neighbors, fathers, workers, and professionals (ranging in age from 27 to 74) who led seemingly normal lives in the Vaucluse and Mazan region (France).

Dominique Pélicot recruited them through an ad on a hookup website: «I drug my wife, and the two of us rape her.» An ad similar to this one was posted by the accused to recruit men to abuse his drugged wife. The ad remained online for more than 10 years, until the website disappeared.

And here come the questions:

How is it possible that, in a society that defines itself as «respectful of women’s rights,» an advertisement like this could remain posted for nearly 10 years without anyone reporting or investigating it?

How is it possible that dozens of men from all walks of life (individuals considered «respectable» by society) offered to rape a drugged woman?

How is it possible that, after so many decades of feminist struggle, things like this still happen?

There is only one answer:

Years go by, and our societies remain just as sexist and patriarchal as they were 200 years ago. Most men continue to view us, women, as objects to be abused with impunity. All this despite the feminist struggle, which focuses its efforts on so-called «equality,» even while knowing that men and women are not, in fact, equal.

Unless we, women, seize economic and political power, nothing will change. It is essential that all power rests in our hands. It is really important that we, women, lead the political sphere, draft the laws, and administer justice. Men must stop viewing the female body as an object of desire or a sexual plaything, and begin to see it in a different light. Once we achieve a matriarchal and gynocratic world, men will (hrough a slow, gradual process) come to feel increasing respect, and perhaps even a measure of fear, toward women. This is the only way to ensure that incidents like this do not happen again in the future.
